Properties
SENTINEL contains the active ingredients milbemycin oxime and lufenuron.
Milbemycin oxime is a mixture of the macrolides milbemycin A3 oxime and milbemycin A4 oxime. Milbemycin oxime is active against nematodes and arthropods. Like other macrolides, milbemycin oxime interacts with the GABA receptors of the nervous system.
Lufenuron is an insect growth regulator belonging to the group of benzoyl-phenyl-ureas (BPUs) and is classified as an insect development inhibitor (IDI). Like all BPU's, lufenuron acts as a chitin synthesis inhibitor. Treated immature fleas will not be able to molt to the next stage and females feeding on treated animals will produce eggs out of which no larvae will hatch. The interruption of the flea life cycle at various levels results in a long-term very effective flea control on the animal as well as in the environment.
SENTINEL is well tolerated by dogs of all ages and breeds, including Collie breeds and breeding animals.
Indications
SENTINEL is an oral tablet for the prevention and control of flea populations, the prevention of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) disease and the treatment and control of roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum) and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis) in dogs.
Dosage and Administration
SENTINEL is given orally with a meal at the minimal dose of 0.5 mg milbemycin oxime and 10mg lufenuron per kg body weight according to the following table:
| Weight of dog | Tablet |
| 1 to 4 kg | 1 tablet of SENTINEL 2.3mg /46mg |
| > 4 to 11 kg | 1 tablet of SENTINEL 5.75mg/115mg |
| > 11 to 23 kg | 1 tablet of SENTINEL 11.5mg/230mg |
| > 23 to 45 kg | 1 tablet of SENTINEL 23mg/460mg |
Dogs over 45 kg are given an appropriate combination of tablets.
SENTINEL must be given at monthly intervals, preferably on the same date starting within 1 month of the begin of the transmission season and continuing until 1 dose after its end. Where heartworm transmission is not seasonal SENTINEL is given throughout the year. Dogs living in heartworm-free regions and travelling to heartworm risk areas should be treated within 1 month of the beginning of the exposure to transmission. If necessary administrations should be repeated monthly until 1 administration after the end of the exposure risk. If SENTINEL replaces another heartworm prevention the first dose should be given within 1 month after the previous treatment. The tablets can be given directly into the mouth of the dog or they can be given in a portion of food.
For flea control treatment of existing infestations can begin at any time. In cases of severe infestations the use of an adulticide during the first few weeks of the treatment may be necessary.
For prevention of flea infestations treatment should commence in spring, before the beginning of the flea season, and continued monthly throughout the season.
For flea control all dogs and cats in a household must be treated in order to prevent the build up of developing fleas in the environment, thus establishing an infestation. For cats use PROGRAM oral suspension or PROGRAM Injectable suspension for cats.
SENTINEL must be administered with a meal. It can be given with a small quantity of food before the rest of the meal is given, or per os immediately after feeding.
Special Precautions and Warnings
Dogs should be tested for heartworm infection. Heartworm prevention programs should be started only in dogs found to be uninfected.
